What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

Depending on which qualification you choose, you'll cover topics including:

  • hand care, skin care, nail art and shampooing
  • make up application and face painting•Women's hair styling
  • using colour to create an image.

For these qualifications you'll complete practical demonstrations and assignments.

Which level is right for me?

Level 1
You're just starting out in hair and beauty and want a basic understanding of the industry in order to succeed in a job in the hair and beauty area or move on to further study. 

Level 3
You have a qualification at Level 2 and want to progress further, or you're thinking of doing a qualification at Level 1 and want to make sure you've the foundations you need.

Following completion of these qualifications, you can progress onto a Level 1 or Level 2 NVQ or VRQ Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy.

Level 1

Level 1 is ideal if you're just starting out in hair and beauty and want an understanding of the industry - enough to succeed in a job in the area or to move on to further study.

There are three qualifications available at this level:

  • Level 1 Award in an Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector
  • Level 1 Certificate in an Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector
  • Level 1 Diploma in an Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector.

Whichever qualification you choose, you complete two mandatory units:

  • Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
  • Presenting a professional image in a salon.

Depending on whether you choose the shorter award or the longer certificate or diploma, you also choose one or a number of optional units from a range of 12, including:

  • Skin care
  • Nail art application
  • Styling men's hair
  • Styling women's hair
  • The art of photographic make-up.
